Hope Amelia Solo (born July 30, 1981) is an American soccer goalkeeper who currently plays for the magicJack of Women's Professional Soccer. She is the current starting goalkeeper for the United States women's national soccer team. Solo was born in Richland, Washington on July 30, 1981. Her father Jeffrey, of Italian descent who grew up in the Bronx, was a sometimes-homeless Vietnam War veteran. It was Jeffrey who taught her how to play soccer. Although her parents divorced when she was six and she lived with her mother, Solo maintained a close relationship with her father, who continued to be a major influence in her life until his sudden death of heart failure in June 2007. On August 29, 2011, Solo was confirmed to be a contestant on the 13th season of Dancing with the Stars. She is paired with professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She was serenaded by Sporting KC player C. J. Sapong when the National Team practiced in Kansas City September 15, 2011.

'm just excited for a change. I'm at that point in my career, I'm 27, where I just want something different. Going in, I don't know what to expect. I have a Brazilian coach. He doesn't speak English. I have a Brazilian goalkeeper coach, and he too doesn't speak English. I've heard his style is completely different than anything I've ever seen. As much as it's going to be interesting - I'm happy to have something new, because I think change is good. Check out the hair color.
I love the draft picks that we got. We're putting together, on paper, an amazing team. I hope it all comes together on the field. We've got some of the best Brazilian players, who I fortunately played with while I was in Sweden. I lived with them and know them pretty well. It's all coming together. pretty well. We have, obviously, Chups (Lori Chalupny) and Tina (Ellertson). Tina and I played together at Washington, and on national team and now in St. Louis. It's perfect.

fter watching the United States women’s soccer team’s incredible comeback in the 2011 Women’s World Cup quarterfinals against Brazil, I had a ton of things rushing through my head. What heart. What an improbable comeback. What a match. How cool was that to watch? Oh, and I have fallen helplessly, hopelessly in love with United States goalkeeper Hope Solo.
So here is my very private letter to Ms. Solo (who is single) letting her know how I feel.
Dear Hope,
You were incredible against Brazil, but that’s not why I’m writing this. I just want you to know that we’re perfect for each other. Yes, you read that right. You and I are completely perfect for each other. I’ll give you a minute so you can digest just how lucky you are.

Watching you go into beast mode during the match yesterday just did it for me. By the time you made your (I’m estimating here) 20th ridiculous save, I was swooning. What can I say? Experts all claim you’re the world’s best goalie, and, frankly, I can’t disagree with that…I can’t agree either, since I don’t really know anything about women’s soccer.
When you stopped that first penalty kick, and the referee awarded another, and you flipped out and got a yellow card, I was all set to throw down with that Australian broad who FIFA apparently deemed qualified enough to referee the match. Not that I’d ever hit a woman or anything I just mean that…moving on.

Hope Solo Bio & Pics

U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team goalkeeper Hope Amelia Solo was born on July 30, 1981 in Richland, Washington. At an early age, Hope developed a love for athletics, enjoying basketball, snowboarding, and beach volleyball in addition to soccer. From 1996 to 1999, Hope competed as a forward for the Richland High School Bombers. Over her high school career, she scored a total of 109 goals, including two in the State Championship game in 1999. She was named a two-time Parade All-American.

In 1999, Hope went to play for the University of Washington Huskies where she switched to the goalkeeper position. Hope quickly adapted to her new defensive role and was named a four-time All-Pac-10 athlete and a three-time NSCAA All-American. As a senior, she was the only goalkeeper in contention for the prestigious Hermann Award, and left the Huskies’ as Washington’s all-time leader in shutouts (18), saves (325), and GAA (1.02).

In 2000, after having played on multiple U.S. Junior National soccer teams, Hope moved up to the full U.S. National Team. In 2003, she was drafted to the WUSA’s Philadelphia Charge. Following her time with the Charge, she played for Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC of Göteborg, Sweden in the Swedish Premier Division in 2004 and for Olympique Lyonnais in the French First Division in 2005.

In 2004, Hope was selected as an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Team, behind veteran Briana Scurry. In 2005, Hope was promoted to the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. Team and started 7 matches, earning 7 shutouts. In 2006, she played in 18 matches and her 1,054 minutes streak of preventing a goal from the run of play led the team to a 14-0-4 season. In 2007, Solo started 15 games for a team record of 13-0-2, allowing only 8 goals. She also started four games in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In 2008, Hope had 9 shutouts in 16 starts leading up to the Olympics, playing in the Four Nations Tournament, the Algarve Cup, and the Peace Queen Cup. In the summer of 2008, Hope once again joined the U.S. Women’s Olympic Soccer team, this time as the starting goalkeeper. In Beijing, the United States’ team fought hard in the qualifying round and eventually advanced to the Gold Medal match against Brazil. The Gold Medal match was a defensive showdown. Solo was able to fend off Marta and the aggressive Brazilian offense, earning a shutout. The U.S. won 1-0 in extra time to win the Gold Medal.

In September 2008, Solo was drafted to the St. Louis Athletica in the newly formed Women’s Professional Soccer league debuting in 2009.

When not playing soccer, Hope enjoys reading, basketball, beach volleyball, and other outdoor activities. She is interested in traveling the world and wants to give back through community service projects.Hope Solo Style
